The head teacher of Locks Heath Junior School was delighted by the surprise celebration to honour his retirement.

Jim Lambert, who will be much missed by staff, pupils, parents and governors, was overwhelmed by the scores of people who came to the school for a picnic to recognise his 15 years running the school.

“It’s been a bit of an emotional time,” said Mr Lambert. “We’ve had so many things going on which was lovely.”

He joined in the lessons of all the year groups, attempting to guess famous eggs – such as Lewis Hamilton, Katy Perry and Cheryl Cole – and watched pupils rap and perform poetry.

Jim, who lives in the New Forest said: “Locks Heath is a very hard place to leave. It’s been a complete pleasure and a privilege to work in this community.

“I’ve really loved every minute of it!

“I’ve loved being involved in the sport and music at Locks Heath, which are probably two of our main strengths, and the sheer commitment and the pride to learn in the school has been brilliant.

“The school governors have been so supportive in letting us be creative within our vision.

“I’d just like to say a huge thank you to everybody I’ve worked with and got to know and I wish them all continued success and happiness.”

Jim had also been thrown a surprise party held at Avon Tyrrell activity centre where former pupils and staff he’s worked with over the years joined in the  celebrations.

Year Six pupil Niamh Beattie, 11, who is leaving the school alongside the head teacher, said: “I feel sad that the school will lose a great head teacher. He’s been so supportive and he’s quite funny too.”

Her mum, Tina, was one of hundreds of parents at the picnic celebration.

The 42-year-old, of Deacon Road in Locks Heath, said: “It’s been a lovely, fitting tribute to a very much loved head master who’s done so much for the school and the community. I’m amazed they were able to keep it all a secret!”

Andy Clarke, the deputy head teacher who will be taking over the running of the school for one year fromf September, has been working with Mr Lambert since they both started in 1996.

He said: “He’s been here for 15 years and he’s a much loved and respected head teacher.

“We wanted an occasion for the children to say goodbye and an opportunity for the parents to come and say goodbye and have a chat.

“He’s been an inspirational character for me and I’ve really loved working with him.”

He added: “I think I would’ve moved on sooner had it not been for the great relationship and guidance I’ve had while working with him.

“I feel very confident about taking on acting head teacher next year because of him. I’m looking forward to it.”
